Xigera Mokoro
Deep within Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, Botswana lies one of Africa’s best kept secrets. Xigera Mokoro is one of the most idyllic locations throughout Botswana situated on Paradise Island in the middle of the Delta, surrounded by riverine forests and grassland framing the river in lush vegetation. Xigera (pronounced Keejera) is the jewel of the wetland paradise.
The camp is set in the perfect location for a once in a lifetime safari experience, offering inland safaris on the plains of Botswana or the chance to safari along the water’s edge providing exquisite views of crocodiles and hippos in their natural environment.
The camp itself consists of ten beautiful suites with bathroom and private indoor and outdoor showers. Each tent is based on raised bases and walkways, each offering exquisite vistas of lagoons, rivers and forest which have to be explored in a traditional Mokoro. A mokoro is a traditional hollowed out canoe, with a beautifully natural way gliding over the river, creating only the faint sound of waves lapping the boat which can occasionally distract you from the exceptional view.
Xigera Mokoro seems to sit on the water beautifully offering a sense of serenity and peace, like no other camp in Botswana. The truth is that Xigera is more than a water camp; the area is home to Lions, hyenas and leopards as well as buffalo who happily swim and wade through the water in search of food.
The lounge is the hub of the camp playing host to meals and evening drinks throughout your stay, here you get the chance to get to know your neighbour as well as the opportunity to here traditional tales and anecdotal experiences from the in house safari guides and trackers as each member of staff are native to the region and are all traditional tribesman, Okavango born, they therefore have an understanding of the area unlike anyone else in the region allowing them to share information held for generations
